FLOOD PROTECTION

♦ POSITION IN CARTERTON BOROUGH. “NO CHANCE OF MAJOR DISASTER.” (“Times-Age” Special.) “I do not think there is any great danger of a major disaster from that source,” observed the Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, when referring at last night's meeting of the Carterton Borough Council to a letter from Mr W. Howard Booth drawing attention to the possibility of the town being flooded by the Maungatereri River. Mr Booth stated that a groyne constructed by the Borough had been washed away and suggesting that a three-foot bank be. erected. Mr Taverner recalled that some years ago the Works Committee had inspected the area in question and had decided that it was either a matter of carrying out a very large work or else doing something that might not be of much value. It was decided to advise Mr Booth that the Works Committee would investigate the position.
