DRINKING AT DANCES
REFORM REQUESTED. BY WOMEN’S DEPUTATION. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WANGANUI, June 28. A deputation from the Wanganui branch of the National Council of Women, with a request for some reform in connection with drinking at dance halls, was received at a meeting of the Wanganui City Council tonight. The deputation consisted of Mesdames A. C. Tizard, Beaumont, Bates, and A. Chesswallis. Mrs Chesswallis said one local body had a bylaw which made it an offence for anyone to leave a dance hall. She asked that a similar bylaw be introduced by the Wanganui City Council.
The women of Wanganui were perturbed by the question of drinking at dances, said Mrs Tizard. The council had not been unmindful of the problem, said the mayor, Mr W. J. Rogers. It was a difficult problem with which to deal. Some time ago it was proposed to introduce an amendment to the Police Offences Act to deal with the question. This would make it an offence to take liquor into a dance. - This was the only way to deal with the problem. It was a Government responsibility rather than one for local bodies. Cr. J. J. Scott asked whether many cases were found in Wanganui. The deputation stated that it had found the position to be very serious. The question was referred to a special bylaws committee for consideration. The committee will consist of the mayor and Crs. C. N. Armstrong and J. Siddells.
