BRITISH MUSIC SOCIETY
A GROUP EVENING. On Monday evening a largely attended group evening was held at the residence of Dr and Mrs N. Prior, Perry Street. The lecturers were Miss Olive Sutherland and Mr H. R. Thompson, and a musical programme under the leadership of Mrs Miller Hope was provided. Shakespeare and his music was delightfully told in an interesting way by Miss Sutherland, illustrated by the songs of his various plays and sung by two College girls, Gillian Gooder and Sylvia Dunbar. This contribution was most appreciated. Other items of the same period were given by members as follows:-—Henry VIII dances (pianoforte duet), Mrs Miller Hope and Miss M. McClymont; solos by Miss Gaudin and Mr Greer; pianoforte solo, “Portia,” Mr Massey; duet, "Where the Bee Suck,” Miss O'Donnell and Mrs Burke; pianoforte duet, “MidSummer Night’s Dream,” Mr and Mrs Miller Hope; and a glee by members I "Full Fathoms Five.”) The second half of the programme was ably carried out by Mr Thompson, who gave an interesting outline of the play “Peer Gynt.” Musical items of the same period followed this interesting and humorous talk: “Peer Gynt Suite” by Mesdames Hessey and Miller Hope, and a solo by Miss Jamieson. An enjoyable evening was brought to a close by the singing of the National Anthem. A vote of thanks was moved by the president, Mr Massey, to Dr and Mrs Prior for the use of their home and carried by acclamation.
