PARLIAMENT
FORMAL BUSINESS YESTERDAY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Brief sitting of both Houses of Parliament were held after the opening ceremony yesterday. Formal business only was transacted. In the House of Representatives the first member to catch the eye of the Speaker, the Hon W. E. Barnard, was the Rev C. L. Carr (Government. Timaru), who had a petition to present. Notices of questions were fewer than usual, being limited to two. On the motion of the Prime Minister, the R 1 Hon M. J. Savage, the Expiring Laws Continuance Bill, a measure which is never passed, but it simply a reminder that Parliament is jealous of its rights and its hold on the Exchequer, was read a first time pro forma. A copy ot his Excellency’s speech was also tabled for “purposes of greater accuracy.” The House adjourned at 3.10 p.m. until today, when an Imprest Supply Bill will be taken. The Address-in-Rcply debate will commence in the House of Representatives tomorrow night, and in the Legislative Council today.
