WAR DEBTS
PROFESSOR IRVING FISHER’S SUGGESTION REDUCTION OR ABOLITION OF INTEREST. PAYMENT ONLY POSSIBLE IN GOODS By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright.) NEWHAVEN (Conn.), June 26. Dr Irving Fisher, professor of political economy at Yale University, stated to the United Press today that the United States had come as near cancellation of the European war debts as public opinion would permit. “I personally,” said Dr Fisher, “do not object to absolute cancellation, but, due to public opinion, this is out of the question. I suggest reducing or abolishing the interest and spreading the payment over at least 62 more years. This might create better understanding and help Mr Hull (United States Secretary of State) to get the sanction of public opinion. “I agree with Mr Hull that any stimulus to international trade is helpful to our domestic economy. If Europe really is to pay she must pay in goods, but tariff restrictions do not permit this. When we think in terms of money, we want Europe to pay, but when we think in terms of goods we do not want her to pay.’ We must therefore either reduce our tariff or cancel the debts.”
