THE MODERN GIRL
. NEW SILENT STANDARDS. “Women, admitted to knowledge, face facts,” said Mrs Mary A. Hamilton in a recent broadcast talk on the future of women. “In the facing that is being done by the young, of either sex, there is of necessity of measure of courage—for the facts are very unpleasant and the possibilities dark in the extreme. This squaring up to the facts has to be done for oneself. Talking about it is against the rules. This apparent ‘closeness’ on the part of the modern girl makes her seem hard to older people. But it is in the main an over-lay. Underneath lies a quick sensitiveness which has standards of its own. I firmly believe that these new silent standards are essentially social and co-operative. That is why none of the shadows that lie over our common future shake my hopefulness for women, or m.y belief in their future contribution in service.”
