WELLINGTON OUTCLASSED. INDIAN TEAM’S EASY WIN. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Before a crowd of approximately 10,000 at the Basin Reserve, Wellington. the Prince of Mahavadar’s Indian hockey team defeated Wellington by 12 goals to nil on Saturday afternoon. The teams were presented to the Gov-ernor-General, Lord Galway, ' before the match began. The ground was in perfect order, there was no wind, and the Indian team gave an exhibition of hockey that delighted the crowd and made the Wellington team look like schoolboys. In the six previous matches which have been played by the Manavadar team, they won on wet grounds by margins of four or - five goals. Their remarkable form on Saturday afternoon was in some measure a revelation. It was the first time that.they had played on a ground measuring up to their standards, and their play was faultless. “It was the cleanest game I have ever played in in New Zealand,” said S. M. Russian, captain of the team, who toured the Dominion in 1935 with the All India side. The Indians fielded their strongest side and from the first whistle they were after victory. Sultan Khan, the phenomenal inside-left, scored six goals. Abdul Latif scored three, and Shafat Khan, Shahabuddin, and Fernandez scored one each. The first half of the game produced the best hockey, although six goals were scored in each spell. The Wellington team played firstclass hockey according to interprovincial standards, but they were outclassed in every move. OTAGO CLEANED UP. BY ENGLISH LADIES’ TEAM. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, June 26. Though the Otago women’s hockey team played a surprisingly good game against the English women’s touring team on Saturday, the issue was never in doubt and the superior teamwork of the visitors won the day. The game resulted in a win for England by nine goals to nil. Otago appeared to suffer from an inferiority complex at the start, for no other reason could be propounded for the many lost opportunities. The game was played at a fast pace
for the most part, with the exception of a period in the second half when the heavy nature of the ground appeared to have a tiring effect on the players. The English women turned every opportunity to good account. England's goals were secured by Misses P. O'Donoghue (3), J. Wright (3), P. Shelmendine and J. Dowling, one each. The visitors will leave for Central Otago on Monday morning and play a match at Alexandra on Wednesday. GAMES IN WAIRARAPA. SATURDAY’S RESULTS.
