TOWN PLANNING

MASTERTON SCHEME BEING PREPARED. HEARING OF OBJECTIONS. A town planning scheme for Masterton is at present being prepared and is expected to be completed within the next few weeks. In view of this it is interesting to note that a special committee set up by the Town Planning Board has been sitting in Dannevirke to hear objections to the Dannevirke plan, one of the members of the committee being the Mayor of Masterton, Mr T. Jordan. | Besides a number of individual .objections, commercial interests lodged protests concerning the amount of coverage allowed in the case of business sections. In the case of interior sites a maximufh of eighty per cent coverage is fixed and for exterior sites (those on corner sections or adjoining an ample service lane) ninety per cent is allowed. The provision of service lanes to give access to the back portions of business sections is an important feature of town planning, as it enables these areas to be served by motor vehicles without the necessity of using the main street and in consequence causing a congestion of traffic. The town planning scheme does not interfere in any way with existing buildings, but relates only to future building developments. The committee. which heard the Dannevirke objectors will report to the Town Planning Board.
