PRICE OF OYSTERS
INCREASE IN AUCKLAND. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, June 24. Increases over last year’s prices of 2s 6d a sack and 6d a sugar-bag in the wholesale price of rock oysters will be charged when the Government oyster depot at Auckland opens for the season next Wednesday. In spite of the increases, however, it is stated that retailers will bear the additional cost themselves, and will adhere to last year's prices. Very heavy reproduction of rock oysters occurred during the recent long warm summer, and the opening of the season has consequently been delayed a month later than usual. The season will last for about 12 weeks, and it is expected that about 5000 sacks will be marketed at the depot during that period. Pickers started work on June 15 and are operating on all beds, these including the Bay of Islands, Kaipara, Whangarei, Great Barrier, Coromandel and local areas. Indications are that the oysters will be of considerably better quality than they have been in the past two or three, years.
