The Yangtse has overflowed on the north and south banks in the neighbourhood of Taihu, whence the Japanese are operating within advance of Hankow. It is felt that the pressure of the advance is now relieved, largescale operations being impossible. Feld headquarters have telegraphed to General Chiang Kai-shek as follows: “The countryside is seriously flooded. We hold strong hillside positions. A Japanese advance is now practically impossible.” MENACE TO SWATOW. LANDING CONSIDERED IMMINENT. (Recd This Day, 9.35 a.m.) SHANGHAI, June 23. Japanese planes again bombed Swatow and the water supply has been cut off. A Japanese landing is considered imminent.
