Mr D. B. Curry, of Masterton, was a visitor to Wellington today. Sir Lindo Ferguson, Dunedin, has been appointed a member of the Board of Health for a period of three years. The Hon P. Fraser, Minister of Health and Education, is expected to return to Wellington tomorrow morning from the south. The Hon W. Lee Martin, Minister of Agriculture, who opened the Taumarunui A. and P. show last, night, returned to Wellington today. Mr G. T. Allen, of Eketahuna, is an inmate of the Masterton Hospital, where he underwent an operation on Wednesday afternoon. Dr Alister Watson, son of Mr and Mrs T. F. Watson, of Masterton, will leave Wellington tonight by the Awatea en route to China. A large number of Masterton friends journeyed to Wellington to bid him farewell. A Gazette notice last night announces that Colonel A. S. Wilder, D. 5.0., M.C., V.D., and Colonel N. L. Macky, M.C., relinquish their appointments as honorary aides-de-camp to his Excellency the Governor-General. The estate of the late Mrs Eleanor Caroline Riddiford, Lower Hutt, has been sworn for probate purposes at under £12,000. The executors are Mr Daniel Henry Strother Riddiford, Featherston; Mr Eric Leslie Riddiford, Orongorongo; and Mrs Ngaire Kettle, Napier.
Mr Oscar Garden, formerly of Christchurch, who flew from England to Australia in 1930, has passed his chief navigator’s examination. Mr Garden has been engaged in commercial flying for some time, and is employd by British Airways, Limited. Mr Gordon Turnbull, youngest son of Mrs Turnbull, of Kuripuni Street, Masterton, is leaving at the end of the month for England, where he is taking up a position as a mechanic in the Hawker aeroplane factory. He will travel by the Orontes from Australia.
The death occurred at Marton yesterday of Mr R. E. Beckett, aged 83 years, who had been prominently associated with Marton and district affairs for 63 years. Born in London, he arrived in New Zealand in 1873 and commenced business in Marton in 1875 as an auctioneer and general merchant. The business was finally absorbed by Messrs Abraham and Williams, of which firm he was a director. Mr Beckett was keenly interested in local body affairs. He had been a county councillor from 1892 till 1907, and had also been Mayor of Marton for three periods.
