BRIGHT CONCERT

LOCAL AND VISITING ARTISTS. A bright programme of song, dance and humour was presented to a large audience at the Opera House last night by a number of local and visiting artists. The proceeds of the concert are to be donated to the Otaki Health Camp and the Opera House Furnishing Fund. Frank Pool’s Blue River Orchestra, with three bright numbers, set things going with a swing, and the next artists to appear, the Hamua Glee Party, carried on the good work with poi dances and action songs. Extremely popular throughout the evening were the Scottish dancers, pupils of Miss Adeline Burnett, of Wellington. To the strains of the bagpipes, the young performers presented a number of clever national dances. Particularly well executed were the sword dance by four of the senior pupils and the sailors’ hornpipe by a group of juniors. Two of Miss Burnett’s pupils also appeared in solo dances. Miss Noeline Graham, of Masterton, performed a dainty skipping dance, and Miss Valmai Price, also of Masterton, appeared in a bright military number. Two smart tap ballets were presented by the pupils of Miss Hazel Lock, of Masterton. Mrs Evelyn Oliver, accompanied by a vocal quartet of Maori maidens, sang three popular numbers, and Mrs J. Moss and Mr. W. McMichael were heard to advantage in soprano and tenor solos respectively. Messrs Rex and Ross Riley and D. Wellington appeared in vocal numbers with saxophone accompaniment. Masterton’s old' favourite, Mr Harry Hall, kept the audience laughing with his clever songs and grotesque costumes and antics. A very small, but a very clever performer, was Mr Sid Gerrand’s dog Teddy, who soon won the hearts of the audience with his remarkable exhibition of tricks. At an interval during the evening, the chairman of the Trust Lands Trust, Mr H. P. Hugo, expressed thanks to the artists and all others who had contributed to the success of the concert.
