SIX DROWNED
TORPEDO BOMBERS CRASH INTO SEA. UNITS OF THE SINGAPORE FORCE. LONDON, June 22. Six persons, including a New Zealander, Pilot Officer Hugh Angus Bethune, were drowned when two R.A.F. torpedo bombers crashed into the sea during exercises off Port Swettenham, Malay States, today. NEW ZEALAND VICTIM. CAREER STARTED AT RONGOTAI. By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, This Day. The Pilot-Officer Bethune who was among the drowned in the torpedo bomber crash in the Malay Straits was a son of Mrs Bethune, widow of the late Walter E. Bethune. He was 23 years of age. He started flying four years ago, at Rongotai, and in June, 1936, left for England to join the Royal Air Force. He was transferred to Singapore in February last.
