FEATHERSTON
SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING (“Times-Age” Special) At the monthly meeting of the Featherston school committee a credit balance of £53 was reported. Wellington District Methodist Church Women’s Bible Class Union forwarded a donation of £2 and conveyed thanks and appreciation for the use of the school buildings for their Easter camp. The Workers’ Education Association asked for the use of a room at the school for the purpose of holding discussions and lecture meeting of a W.E.A. study group in the district — Granted. Mr James M. Nicholls, 4 Carterton, wrote seeking nomination as a Wairarapa representative on the Wellington Education Board. Mr Nicholls is to receive nominations from individual members of the Committee. Some members also mentioned that they were nominating Col McDonald for reelection. The Wellington Education Board vzrote re proposed central heating, advising that, where in approved cases authority is given for the installation of modern types of -central heating to replace open fires, School Committees are not asked to contribute towards the cost of new radiators. It was stater that hot water radiators had been installed in some new schools and are giving good results, but, running costs are an important item. The Board’s experience is that the Wairarapa Power Board’s rates are very satisfactory. It was decided to apply for two men under the Government subsidy scheme to improve the main school grounds by removing tree stumps. The secretary reported that Mr Ben Roberts, M.P., had arranged for him to interview the Hon P. Fraser, Minister for Education, in an endeavour to finalise the Committee’s application for new High School accommodation. Mr Kenward was unable to see the Minister, who was absent from Wellington, but saw the Minister’s private secretary, who discussed the matter at length, and then introduced Mr Kenward to the Departmental Chief Architect, who went thoroughly into the matter. His proposal was that entirely new accommodation should be provided for all children up to and including Standard TV., and that the present primary building should serve as an intermediary and High School. This is practically what the'Committee has been striving for, and the new building will be in the main school grounds. If this is approved by the Committee, steps will be immediately taken to expedite the matter. The Committee agreed, and complimented Mr Kenward on attaining such satisfactory results on going to headquarters. The resignation of the headmaster (Mr Prendergast) was received with regret.
