The Prime Minister, Senor Negrin, returning from a fortnight’s tour of the Levante territory, told newspaper , correspondents he was disgusted to find that during his absence there had been underhand political machinations. “There > are apparently persons among us,” he said, “so cowardly that’ they do not hesitate at treason and, while encouraging internal distrust, intrigue abroad for us to be asphyxiated.” He added that if the mass of the people and the army got to know what was going on they would rise and sweep away all politicians, and with justice. But this was not a moment to divert the nation’s energies.' It would be necessary to wait some time before engaging in a thorough cleanup.
