INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS

OPENING W.E.A. LECTURE OF SEASON. MASTERTON BRANCH ANNUAL MEETING. At the first meeting of the Masterton branch of the W.E.A., held in the Y.M.C.A. last evening, Mr A. S. Hely, tutor-organiser for the Wellington district gave an introductory lecture on International affairs. The speaker gave a very informative and interesting address, dealing particularly with the position of Austria and Germany, the lecture being followed by a keen discussion. Mr Hely will give a series of six public lectures on International affairs, the next being on Wednesday, July 6, and then fortnightly. After Mr Hely's lecture the annual meeting of the branch was held, when the following committee was elected: Mr C. J. Williams (chairman), Messrs M. G. Mackay, R. N. Shaw, H. Tinsley, and A. Carmine (secretary). It was decided to form discussion groups to study the courses “International Issues” and “New Zealand Today and Tomorrow,” courses of twelve papers each prepared specially for the W.E.A.

It was stated that a large number of groups took the international course of last year and an entirely new course had ’ been provided this year. The subject “Can We Get Rid of War?” will be discussed in the three opening papers by writers with diverse viewpoints. An expert will deal with “India in 1938” and other titles will be: “Russia and the World,” “The Struggle in Palestine,” “Powers of ; the Mediterranean,” “Claims for Colonies,” “The Struggle in the Far East,” “The Empire and the World,”' “The Present Position of the League,” and “Asiatics and Ourselves.” The contributors to the course are the Hon W. DownieStewart, Mr Willis Airey, Lecturer in History at Auckland University College, Mr S. N. Ziman, a former Rhodes Scholar and Mr J. A. Brailsford, W.E.A. tutor, Otago. The initial meeting of the groups will be held in the Municipal Buildings next Monday and all interested are invited to attend. These groups will be supplementary and additional to the public lectures to be given by Mr Hely.
