CHAMPIONSHIP CONTESTS AT WIMBLEDON PLAYERS OF TWENTY NATIONS COMPETING SOME OF THE OPENING GAMES . By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. (Recd This Day, 7.35 a.m.) LONDON, June 20. The Wimbledon tennis championships, in which representatives of over twenty nations are competing, opened in brilliant weather. The New Zealander, Andrews, strained an Achilles tendon, and was scratched. Budge opened on the centre court against Gandardower, who failed to sustain his reputation as a giant killer. Although occasionally he brought off fine recoveries and attacked gallantly, Budge always spurted when pressed. A minor sensation was caused by Filby, a rising English player, leading Austin two sets to one and 5/4 in the fourth, but he became over-anxious and missed opportunities. Results: Malfroy (New Zealand) defeated Moore (Britain), 6/1, 6/2, 6/2. Lee defeated Brown (New Zealand), 6/4, 6/4, 3/6, 6/3. Hecht defeated Leyland (Britain), who replaced Andrews, 6/4, 6/3, 6/4. Budge defeated Gandardower, 6/2, 6/3, 6/3. Khosinkie defeated Hare 6/3, 6/4, 6/4. Austin defeated Filby, 4/6, 6/1, 3/6, 6/4, 6/3. Puncec defeated Brugnon 6/3, 6/2, 6/4. Metaxa defeated Wilde, 4/6. 6/2, 9/7, 7/5. Kukuljevic defeated Butler, 2/6, 2/6, 6/3. 6/4, 6/2. Other winners included Mako, Henkel, Menzel, Mitic, Boussus and Lyttelton. OFFER TO BUDGE MAY BECOME PROFESSIONAL LONDON, June 20. The “Daily Herald” says that it is practically certain that, if Budge completes his quadruple championship at Wimbledon and leads the United States to victory in the Davis Cup, he will accept an offer to turn professional under contracts guaranteeing him minimum earnings of £50,000 a year.
