Tunnel Under City.
I unnei unucr The work of boring the tunnel for the new supplementary sewer, which is going to afford much relief to Wellington’s drainage system in the years to come, is being carried on night and day. Yesterday the city engineer, Mr K. E. Luke, reported that the second section of the work had “holed through.” This was the section between Buckle Street and Martin Square. While it is of no great length, Mr Luke described it as a tricky bit of work, for the reason that at Martin Square provision was made for a right-angle turn in the tunnel. Yet even with this handicap the line of the tunnel when the two faces met was only a quarter of an inch out. The next section cityward. Mr Luke said, would be across Te Aro flat toward Bute Street, while there were men working southward to meet that line from Dixon Street.
