WAGES TAX
INCREASE YIELD LAST YEAR Figures published in the abstract of the public accounts for the financial year ended March 31 last show - that the ordinary income of the Employment Promotion Fund amounted to £5,398,346, compared with £4,492,256 in the previous year, an increase of £906,090. The principal item, the employment charge of 8d in the pound on wages, salary and other income, amounted to £4,656,165, an increase of £871,763. The registration levy yielded £448,854, or £8292 more than in. 1936-37. Miscellaneous items, which include the balance carried forward from the totalled £293327, an increase of' £26,035. On the expenditure side, administration has increased by £158,555, from £76,445 to £235,000. Grants and payments are £210,578 lower at £2,565,236, and allowances, £1,397,452, are £135,755 less. The balance carried forward is £180,645 higher at £433,890. Securities held in the investment account at the end of 1937-38 were valued at £725,000, compared wtih £175,000 the previous year, an increase of £550,000. Investment income last financial year was £4786, compared with £1822 in 1936-37.
