“BELOW STANDARD”
* SOME GREYTOWN HOUSES. REPORT BY INSPECTOR. (“Times-Age” Special.) “The general standard and condition of many of the occupied premises in your borough leaves much to be desired,” stated the Borough Sanitary Inspector (Mr H. A. Truman) in his annual report submitted to last night’s meeting of the Greytown Borough Council. “In some cases,” added Mr Truman, “the standard is very much below what can be considered as reasonable, but unfortunately in most cases these premises are tenanted by families who are not in a position to pay a reasonable rent. I am quite aware of the fact that many of those places could be closed by me, as provided for under Section 40 of the Health Act, 1920, and I am quite willing to take this course should your council so desire. On the other hand should this course be pursued we are very soon faced with the question of where the families who have been forced out of the condemned buildings are going to be housed, there being no premises available for them at a rent within their means.” In a later portion of his report the. inspector stated that while the swimming baths appeared to be run in an average way, there was room for quite a lot of improvement in the running of these baths.
