FEATHERSTON

HAUNUI CROQUET CLUB (“Times-Age” Special) The Haunui Croquet Club held a euchre afternoon at the pavilion, on Monday evening. The prize winners were: —Mrs M. Baker 1, Mrs Rea 2. Consolation prize, Mrs Barker. The hostesses were Miss Eva Card and Mrs Watson. SOCIAL CLUB DANCE The Kahutara social club held its fortnightly dance and euchre tournament on Saturday night, when there was a good attendance. An orchestra supplied the music. 'The euchre prizes were won as follow: —Ladies, Mrs Kennedy 1, Mrs B. Simmons, 2; Men, Mr L. Bridgewater 1, Mr Thompson 2. Supper was provided. PERSONAL ITEMS. Mr E. Summerville has returned to Wellington after having spent the weekend with Mr A. Robbins, Poi Poi. Miss Donald and Mr Bruce Donald motored to Napier for the weekend. Mr, and Mrs Stalker, Kahutara, have returned from a holiday spent in Auckland. Mr and Mrs Hood and Miss Joan Hood left on Saturday for the Manawatu district, when they intend spending a holiday. LITERARY INSTITUTE A meeting of the Featherston Literary Institute committee was held yesterday, there being present Mr R. W. Matthews (chairman), Mesdames N. C. C. Shepherd, Archie Clark, R. A. Donald, J. G. McKenzie, H. Cundy, Misses Card, Jean Donald, Messrs M. B. Tait, C. C. Kenward, N. C. C. Shepard and the Rev R. S. Keenan. Apologies for absence were, received from the Rev J. T. Holland and Mr A. Clark. The following Executive committee was set up with a view to keeping a better check on reading matter supplied, and the running of the Institute generally:—Mr N. C. C. Shephard (chairman), Mr M. B. Tait, the Rev. R. S. Keenan, the Rev. J. T. Holland, Mrs Shepherd and Mrs R. A. Donald. Information Bulletin No. 1, issued by the Country Library Service was considered, and it was decided to obtain further information. In the meantime' the monthly supply of books is to continue. It was decided that the hours observed' by the lending library be extended with a view to meeting the" requirements of country subscribers. Miss Wilkinson, librarian, tendered her resignation, which was accepted with regret. It was decided to draw up a fresh schedule of duties, and to advertise the position. The matter of providing a ladies’ rest room was again discussed, and the following committee of ladies was appointed to go into the matter of fittings, etc., and report:—Miss Card, Mrs Clark, Miss Jean Donald, Mrs Shepherd and Mrs McKenzie. It was decided to utilise the Committee room at the Institute in the meantime. The special committee appointed to meet the Borough Council Works committee and go into the matter of additions to the building, will meet on Wednesday.
