CARTERTON

PERSONAL ITEMS. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mr and Mrs Joe Underhill, of Hokianga, are visiting Carterton and are the guests of Mr and Mrs Thos. G. Underhill. It is many years since Mr Underhill visited Carterton and he * notices many improvements since he last visited his home town. Among the 'toasts honoured at Saturday night's Fire Brigade re-union was that of Mr E. McKenzie, sole selector to the N.Z. Football Union. In acknowledging the compliment, Mr McKenzie said he was indeed proud to have been appointed sole selector,; and he hoped that his knowledge of football and his selection of the present New Zealand team would justify his appointment. He gave a very interesting review of New Zealand football, durifig his response to the toast, which was warmly honoured. Mr F. H. Davis, District Book Examiner of the Manchester Unity Order of Oddfellows, is at present examining various lodge books in the Wellington District. CARTERTON GAS WORKS. The Carterton Borough Gas Committee held a special meeting at the Borough Chambers on Friday evening. There were present Councillors W. A. Hart (chairman), Miss O. Wolters, C. J. De Lacey and C. E. Stevens. The business was one of urgency and it was decided to order a new Brenin and Donkin 5000 cubic feet exhauster. This was done by cable to London on Saturday. The new engine should be installed in the Carterton works in the course of eight to ten weeks’ time. ODDFELLOWS’ LODGE. An enjoyable time was spent, by members of Loyal Eketahuna Lodge and Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge at Carterton on Saturday evening. Bridge, five-hundred, cribbage and other games were played. At the conclusion of the games the. visitors were, entertained at supper. The N.G. of Eketahuna Lodge thanked the Carterton members for their hospitality which was replied to by Bro. C. E. White. Opportunity was taken to officially present the Carterton Lodge,.with.ithe Ritual Shield recently won in competition. This was done by Bro F. A. Davis, president of the Wellington Past Grands Lodge. In handing the . shield to Bro A. R. Tankersley he said he hoped the time was not far distant when a competition between Wellington and Wairarapa would evenuate. He threw the suggestion out as a basis of discussion when the Wellirigton Past Grands visited Wairarapa in the near future. MINIATURE RIFLES MATCH. A miniature rifles match between Carterton and South Featherston was fired on the Carterton range on Saturday evening and ended in a win for the visitors. McPhee 93, Miss A. McPhee 92; total, 468. ’ DEMAND FOR COKE. There is keen demand for coke at the Carterton gas works and during - last week four tons were disposed of. FIRE BRIGADE RE-UNION. The Carterton Fire Brigade Hall was filled to capacity on Saturday evening, when the annual re-union was held. Visiting firemen were present from Dannevirke, Otaki, Petone, Upper Hutt, Lower Hutt, Silverstream, Eketahuna, Martinborough, Masterton, Greytown and Featherston. Superintendent R. P. Wakelin presided and extended a hearty welcome to the visitors. Apologies were received from Councillors W. A. Hart and C. J. De Lacey, Superintendent Clarke (Masterton), H. J. McKenzie, D. McGregor and H. H. L. Meyrick. The following toast list was honoured: The King—the chairman; United Fire Brigades’ Association, proposed by Secretary King, responded to by Secretary H. G. Carter; Carterton Borough Council —Deputy Sup. J. Churchouse, Deputy Mayor (Mr E. McKenzie) and Councillors C. E. Stevens, L. Clark and R. A. Copeland; P. and A. Society, Power Board, Post and Telegraph and Wairarapa South County Council, Foreman Geo. Steffert —Messrs J. Fisher, W. Boston, N. Boyne, A. Reid; Visiting Firemen, H. Matson— Otaki, Martinborough, Featherston, Petone, Upper Hutt, Lower Hutt, Masterton. Greytown, Dannevirke, Silverstream, Eketahuna representatives; Life and Honorary Members, Fireman J. Finn—R. Smith. E. McKenzie and Dr R. N. Campbell (brigade surgeon);

Ladies, Fireman I. H. Knutson —Les Horne; Entertainers, the chairman, who thanked all who had assisted with items; Press, Secretary Holland. Presentations were made as follows: Fireman Burney Catt, certificate for 3 years’ service; Taucher Cup, Fireman A. Steffert; Shield competition, Foreman G. Steffert and team; two-men competition, Firemen Matson and J. S. King. The following contributed songs, etc: Miss Millichamp, the Rev W. F. Stent, Messrs W. Johansen, C. Kiddie, S. T. Rooney, D. Irwin, J. Chapman, Otane, and Greenland. The singing of "Auld Lang Syne” concluded a very pleasant function. CARDS AND DANCE. There was a large attendance at the weekly euchre tournament and dance conducted by the Carterton Labour Party’s social committee in the Band Hall on Saturday evening. The ladies’ first prize was won by Mrs Playle, Sent’., with Mrs K. Hodder second, and the men’s first prize by Mr D. Phelps with Mr K. Hodder second. The consolation prize went to Mr J. Hooper. The music for the dance was supplied by Mr D. Te Tau and Mr W. Dunn, and extras were played by Miss Jamieson, Mr L. Daysh and Mr J. Blake, Junr. The Monte Carlo dances were won by Miss D. Sewell and I. Garret and Mr R. Haste and Miss E. Fitzgerald. The duties of M.C. were carried out by Mr K. Carroll, assisted by Mr L. Farmer. The manner in which the sit-down supper was arranged was due to a capable women’s committee including Mesdames Andersonr, O'Berg, Benge and Green.
