CENTURY TO HASSETT
A PUNISHING DISPLAY AUSTRALIA’S POOR START BATSMEN KEPT ON DEFENSIVE By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. LONDON, June 18. The weather wsa dull early today for the opening of the match between Lancashire and Australia at Manchester. The teams are:— Australia: Bradman, Badcock, Brown, Fingleton, McCormick, White, Fleet-wood-Smith, Hassett, Chipperfield, Barnett, Waite. O'Reilly is twelfth man. Lancashire: W. H. L. Lister. C. Washbrook, E. Paynter, J. Iddon, N. Oldfield, J. L. Hopwood, A. Nutter, W. Farrimond, W. E. Phillipson, R. Pollard and L. L. Wilkinson. Bradman won the toss and decided to bat on a true and easy wicket. Phillipson and Pollard troubled the early batsmen, the heavy atmosphere enabling the former to swing the. ball freely. He failed to tempt the batsmen with outswingers pitched outside the off stump, but Brown flicked a straight one going away and was easily caught at the wicket. FINGLETON WORRIED Fingleton and Bradman were suffering from sore eyes, but became more comfortable after half an hour till Nutter came on, and immediately worried Fingleton, whom he bowled in the first over. In the next over Bradman, intending to hard drive was easily caught at second slip. The score then stood at 35 for three wickets after 55 minutes had gone. Badcock and Hassett then took up the heavy task. Hassett gave a bright exhibition, cutting and glancing Nutter admirably. Wilkinson was punished badly and the batsmen restored their position to something more normal, adding 55 in 45 minutes. The hundred appeared in 1? hours. Badcock had a narrow escape when 50, snicking the ball near the wicketkeeper. DIFFICULT WICKET. A drizzle began in the middle of the afternoon and Phillipson and Nutter kept the batsmen on the/' defensive. Rain stopped play at 2.45, and when at 4.45 play was resumed the light was dim and the wicket more difficult, but the bowlers were also handicapped by the difficult foothold. BADCOCK REACHES 1000 RUNS. Badcock, when 84, reached his thousand runs for the tour. Two hundred was reached in three hours. Hassett, at 69, was missed by Wilkinson failing to hold a hard, low return with his left hand. Badcock batted 2j hours before he was dismissed. He hit seven fours. The light improved and Hassett became lively, punishing anything short. Chipperfield batted poorly for twenty minutes. Rain finally stopped play. The scores are as follow: — AUSTRALIA. FIRST INNINGS.
