SLEEPERS FOR ALL

INNOVATION ON FRENCH RAILWAYS. Sleeping accommodation for passengers of all classes is one of the first innovations of the new French National Railways. Couchettes, sleeping bunks, are now available for third-class passengers. Hammocks are a novelty of a number of trains running between Paris and the winter sports resorts of Chamonix, Luchon, Tarbes and Mont Dore. The hire of a hammock costs 15 francs (2s) in trains of the southeast region, and the same charge is made in trains of the south-west region, except that for distances of less than 600 kilometres (372 miles) it is reduced to 10 francs (Is 4d).
