ENGLISH BIBLE

ANNIVERSARY OF REFORMATION.

The four hundredth anniversary of the setting up of the open Bible in parish churches was the subject of special references at yesterday’s church services. At St. Matthew's, the Vicar (the Rev. E. J. Rich) made brief reference to the men who were really responsible for giving the open Bible and to the fact that the Bible had made its mark in English literature, which was full of references taken from the Authorised Version. Many phrases in common use, he said, were taken directly from the Bible, although we did not remember the source of them. Mr Rich went on to indicate the effect the Bible had on the character of our race. The best memorial that they could possibly have to those who gave the open Bible was the habit of daily Bible reading by individuals. The Bible was really a chart by which they could guide their lives to the haven they wanted to reach. In the Bible they found God’s plan for the individual and the nation, which was a real help in these stormy days. Special reference to the coming of the open Bible to the English speaking people was made at the Methodist Church service yesterday and on the > previous Sunday by the Rev. F. J. Parker, services in keeping with the anniversary being held. Mr Parker illustrated his survey by means of a special chart.
