KIWIS’ POOR DISPLAY. NEVER HAD CHANCE AGAINST QUEENSLAND. (By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright.) BRISBANE, June 18. Beaten for the ball 43 times out of 64 scrummages, New Zealand never had a chance against Queensland, in the match on Saturday, for, while the forwards, led by McNeight and Brodrick, held their own for most of the game, in the closing stages they were simply overwhelmed. The final score was: Queensland, 31; Kiwis, 11. Although favoured by the breeze in the first half, New Zealand were behind 15—6, and in the second half they could not cope with the brilliance of the Queensland backs, who did what they liked. The fact that Queensland scored seven tries to one was evidence enough of New Zealand’s inferiority, which arose chiefly from the reluctance of their players to tackle their man, preferring to hang off, hoping someone else would take him. The only redeeming feature was the magnificent kicking of Hemi, full-back, who had the crowd of 15,000 on their feet early in the game when he negotiated a penalty from 10 yards beyond the half-way line. He finished by scoring eight out of the 11 points scored by the New Zealanders and hopelessly out-played Whittle, the Kangaroo full-back.
Tetley (Kiwis) was injured for a few minutes during the second half and Brimble (Kiwis), half-back, was, incapacitated by an illegal tackle when he did not have the ball; but that does not account for the scores, which were really due to the failure of the Kiwis to tackle the man with the ball. Tittleton made a few openings, backed up by Chase, but lack of support ruined all efforts when tries might have resulted.
