A Sydney cable message states that the death occurred suddenly, at the age of 55, of Dr H. V. Hordern, a former international cricketer. The Hon D. G. Sullivan, Minister of Industries and Commerce, is visiting Onekaka, where the Government proposes to establish an iron and steel industry.

Major P. de Brandon, Wellington, was a passanger by the Akaroa, which reached Auckland from London on Thursday night. Dr S. L. Ludbrook, Auckland, and Mrs Ludbrook, arrived at Wellington by the Limited express yesterday to join the Mataroa for Panama. Dr Ludbrook will spend four months on research in New York. > Mr A. Morton, Egmont, has been appointed chairman of the Massey College Board, in place of Professor Hunter, who resigned. Mr A. E. Mansford, mayor of Palmerston North, has been appointed vice-chairman. The death has occurred after a long illness of Mr W. Hamilton Irvine, for 27 years secretary of the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce, states a Press Assocaition message from Gisborne. He was in practice in Gisborne as an accountant for many years, and was actively associated with many local organisations. He was in his sixtyseventh year.

Mother Mary Josephine, one of the best-known members of the Order of the Sisters of Mercy, died at St. Leo's Convent, Devonport, yesterday, says an Auckland Press Association message. She'was teaching until Thursday. She held many important positions in the order, including that of Reverend Mother of the Sisters of Mercy of the Auckland Diocese. She visited Ireland in 1921, and brought out a number of postulates. Mr F. W. Saxton, M.Sc.. has been appointed a technical adviser to the Department of Industries and Commerce. He was born in England in 1897. and educated in Wellington. After war service he studied at Victoria University College, graduating bachelor of science in 1935, and taking his mister’s degree in 1937. He has had nearly 20 years’ experience as an industrial chemist. Mr Saxton was the first Wellington Corporation chemist.
