FLOODS SWELLING
JAPANESE DRIVE ON HANKOW HAMPERED Chinese Resistance Stiffening MOTOR AND OTHER BOATS SUNK By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright. (Received This Day, 11.40 a.m.) SHANGHAI, June 16. Chinese resistance to the Japanese advance on Hankow is stiffening as the floods swell under endless rain. The Yangtse-Kiang is 20 feet above its normal level. The inundation has passed Fukuo and is surging down on Chowkiakow Junction, Kailu and the Tasha rivers, 95 miles from the original breaches. Chinese artillery sank six Japanese motor-boats and twenty canvas boats from which landings on the north and south banks of the YangtseKiang were being attempted. The Chinese report the clearance of the south bank and the recapture of Chienkiangkow and Suitoushan on the north bank, where the infantry is doggedly attacking. SALVAGE EFFORTS JAPANESE AND CHINESE WORKING TOGETHER. EFFORTS TO MEND BREACHES FAIL. HANKOW, June 16. ' The rain continues and the Yellow River flood has reached 70 miles due south of Kaifeng, and is sweeping toward Chowkiakon, 40 miles west m The P frantic efforts of Japanese soldiers and Chinese farmers combined have-not availed to arrest the breaches, though the Shantung inundation seems under control. Both Chinese and Japanese are building dykes along the entire length of the Lunghai railway as safety zones.
