GIRL GUIDES

♦ MEETING IN MASTERTON SIR TRUBY KING MEMORIAL A meeting of the executive was held in the lecture room, Municipal building, on Monday. Mrs Jordan (District Commissioner) presided, and there were present, Mesdames Corskie, Horne, Garland, Ractliffe, Hill, Andrews, Forsyth and Stewart. Delegates from the company committees present were Mesdames Thomas, Gaskin, and Aikman. Apologies- for absence were received from Mesdames R. Thomson, J. Irving, Hunter and Miss M. Cameron. Interesting reports were read from the Tararua and Weraiti Brownie Packs, and from the 4th Tararua Company. A letter was received from the Women’s National Welfare League suggesting that the Association should be represented at a discussion on the Home Service Association to be held at a meeting on July 1. Mesdames Forsyth and Thomas were appointed delegates to the meeting. A Dominion-wide appeal to raise funds for a Sir Truby King Memorial from all guides, in appreciation of the great benefit the Plunket Society has been to Guiding in New Zealand has been planned. The Masterton Guides decided to raise their money by a cake sale, each guide to make a cake and arrange a buyer for it. The cakes were judged by Mrs Hill and Mrs Corskie, the prizes going to Fay Spackman for sponge, and Patricia Hunter for shortbread. The executive will subsidise the money raised by the Guide companies.

In connection with the raising of funds for so worthy a memorial, Mrs J. Caselberg, president of the Masterton Branch of the Plunket Society, gave a short talk to the Guides on the life of the late Sir Truby King and spoke also on the aims of the Plunket Society. Her remarks were greatly appreciated. Accounts amounting to £1 3s were passed for payment.
