FEATHERSTON
A COMMISSION CASE. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the ordinary sitting of the Featherston S.M. Court, H. M. Morton, land agent, claimed £5l 5s commission from L. Smith, farmer, Pahautea. Evidence showed that plaintiff had received instructions from the defendant to sell the latter’s leasehold interest in a farm at Pahautea for £lOOO cash and subject to a stock mortgage of £750, and had found a purchaser who had entered into a binding contract to purchase at this price. Defendant, however, had failed to conclude the deal, and had withdrawn the farm from sale. Defendant claimed that the sale should have been subject to a further mortgage of approximately £3OO on buildings, his meaning being that he should receive £lOOO clear on both mortgages. After a lengthy hearing, the Magistrate (Mr H. P. Lawry) held that plaintiff had got a contract signed complying with instructions, and awarded him judgment for £5l ss, and costs £7 2s. LICENSING BREACHES. As the result of a visit after hours to the Tauherenikau hotel by the police last month several licensing cases came before the usual sitting of the S.M. Court when convictions were entered as follows: —L. H. Lambess, licensee, for having sold liquor during prohibited hours was fined £5 and costs. For having been unlawfully on licensed premises, A Alson, E. J. Burke and W. A. Burke were convicted and ordered to pay 10s costs each and Wm. Scott, L. E. Barltrop, W. Cundy, E. Stroud, and R. Buick were each fined 10s and costs lO.s MOTORIST FINED. A. J. •F. Carter, Masterton, was charged at the S.M. Court with having tailed to give way to a motor approaching along Hickson Street at the corner of Fitzherbert Street on May 7, with the result that a collision occurred. Defendant was fined £2 and costs. LIBRARY BOOKS. There was a good attendance at the weekly tournament of the Fire Brigade on Tuesday night, there being 12 tables. The prize-winners were: —Ladies: Mrs H. Williams, 1; Miss Lyford, 2. Men: Mr Sorenson, 1; Mr Fairbrother, 2. Consolation: Ladies, Mrs Hoskins; men, Miss K. Ruane. FIR?-’BRIGADE MEETING. The monthly meeting of the local fire brigade was held last night, Superintendent T. Tidswell presiding over a large attendance of members. Leave of absence was granted to three members. The financial statement was adopted and accounts totalling £7 0s 6d were passed for payment. An invitation from the Carterton, brigade to attend the latter’s annual reunion on June 18 was accepted. It was also decided to attend the annual “Smoko” of the Martinborough brigade on July 14. The secretary was authorised to order a bucket pump. Superintendent Tidswell and Foreman Habib applied for 2-year bars. It was decided to apply to the Borough Council for the usual annual grant. It was decided to make arrangements for the annual dance. PERSONAL. The friends of Mrs M. B. Tait will be pleased to hear that she is making good progress towards recovery after her recent indisposition.
