GREASY SKIN

EASY HOME TREATMENT. Many people suffer from an abnormally greasy condition of the skin, which they find difficult to treat. They complain of faces and particularly noses that shine persistently, no matter how often powder is applied. In most cases the trouble is due to over-activ-ity of the minute oil glands that lie beneath the skin. When this condition receives no proper treatment it leads to the formation of enlarged pores, so it is well to take it in good time. External treatment alone will not be sufficient to stop the trouble or bring the skin back to normal because the greasiness itself is a sign that the sufferer is run-down in general health. The Beauty Expert of The Australian Journal says that by drinking plenty of water between meals and by taking plenty of green vegetables, salads and fresh fruits, the patient will get at the cause of the trouble. Often a course of some good iron or arsenic tonic will lead to rapid improvement, which will be shown outwardly by a skin with the bloom and slightly “matt” surface which betokens good health. Small quantities of cod liver oil or a few drops of halibut liver oil are also helpful. When treating the skin itself one must remember that it does not always pay to give the complexion a very drastic treatment with astringents and other drying lotions. The wisest plan is to remove all make-up at bedtime with a mild cleansing lotion and then to wash the face in tepid water, using > a very pure 'soap. Rinse finally with lukewarm water to which a small teaspoonful of toilet vinegar has been added. An. excellent astringent lotion for a greasy skin can be made as follows: Boil a pint of water for a full five minutes and then pour it over a teaspoonful of boracic crystals; stir in a teaspoonful of spirit of camphor, which can be bought in small quantities from any chemist, and bottle when cool. A little should be patted into the skin nightly with a pad of clean cotton wool.
