HEMI IN GREAT FORM.
By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. SYDNEY, June 13.
After leading 17-8 at half-time the New Zealand Rugby League players went on to a glorious victory in the return match today against New South Wales, whom they defeated 37-18. The weather at Sydney Cricket Ground was cool and cloudy, and there was a slight drizzle. The crowd numbered 18,426. The teams were:—
New Zealand: Hemi, Smith, Chase, McNeil, ’ Tittleton, Wilfred Brimble, Walter Brimble, Tetley, McLeod, Brodrick, Cootes, Orman, McNeight. New South Wales: Conlon, Goodwin, Roser, Hyde, Dawson, Kerr, Williams, Norval, Narvo, Kilham, Porter, Kirkaldy, Stehr. The match was extraordinarily tough. Twenty minutes before the end Porter and Conlon left the field injured, but the Kiwis had the game in hand, leading by 25 to 8. Later Cootes was ordered off.
New Zealand began with fire, but for a period in the first half it flickered out. Subsequently it burst into vivid flame. The visitors were the nippier side on the day. They tackled magnificently, and their positional play was altogether superior to Saturday’s. The forwards and backs combined splendidly. The try of the day originated in the New South Wales twenty-five, when McLeod, Tittleton, Wilfred Brimble and McLeod again and Smith handled for the last-named to cross in the corner.
A try by Hemi was the result of a bluff from a penalty near the home goal-line. He punted, gathered in the ball and crossed and converted the try. Williams later repeated the trick for New South Wales. Hemi had on his kicking boots, goaling in eight of 10 attempts. A try by Chase in the first half was a beautiful individual effort. He gathered in the ball following a dribbling rush, feinted past Conlon and swerved inside Goodwin, who rushed across in a vain attempt to cut him off.
The outstanding forward was McLeod, but McNeight, Brodrick, Tetley and Cootes were conscientious ruckers. Orman was useful in all phases, but was outclassed by the League methods of hooking. Walter Brimble was again a grand tackler, regardless of the size of his opponents. He rendered excellent service from the rucks. Wilfred Brimble was a lively first five-eighth and Chase played well at centre. Hemi was always safe, while both wings .were superb. For New Zealand tries were scored by Smith (2), Chase, Walter Brimble, Tittleton, Hemi, and Wilfred Brimble. Hemi kicked eight goals. Dawson (2), Hyde and Williams scored tries for New South Wales. Williams kicked two goals -and Conlon one.
New South Wales won 'l9 and lost 13 scrums in the first spell, and won 23 and lost 10 in the second. New South Wales received 16 penalties and had 15 awarded against them.
