CANADA'S LOSS REDUCED.

OTTAWA, Canada.

Reflecting the efficiency of Canada’s forest fire protection organisations, there has been a decrease of about 60 per cent in the area of merchantable timber destroyed by fire in the Dominion during the past twenty years. Despite the use of the aeroplane, chains of fire look-out stations and large staffs of competent firefighters, the total area burned over in 1937 exceeded 4,271.000 acres, representing a direct loss in timber and property values of 3.550,000 dollars and a cost in actual fire fighting of 790.300 dollars. Steps are being taken to educate the public to be less careless in wooded areas as approximately 86 per cent of the fires in 1937 were found to be the result of human careless-
