EMPIRE INDUSTRIES

CANADA AND UNITED KINGDOM. OTTAWA, Canada. Canada is. the seventh best market, per head of population, for exports of United Kingdom produce and manufactures, according to researches undertaken by the Empire Industries Association. Of the first eight per capita consuming countries of British goods, no fewer than six, including the first three, are Empire countries. The first ten principal customers for United Kingdom exports in 1937 on a per capita basis were: New Zealand £l2 15s sd, Irish Free State £7 5s 9d, Australia £5 10s Id, Denmark £4 9s sd, Union of South Africa £4 4s 7d, Norway £3 Is 9d, Canada £2 10s, British Malaya £2 9s 4d, Sweden £2 Is 6d, and the Netherlands £1 15s. In its report, the Empire Industries Association says: “In view of the negotiations for a trade agreement with the United States, which, incidentally, may prejudice our exports to Empire countries, it will be observed that the average American was worth 4s lOd to us last year (23rd best customer on a per capita basis), while the average Canadian was worth £2 10s and the average New Zealander £l2 15s sd. “Bearing in mind that a trade agreement with the United States is likely to prejudice our trading transactions with Canada more than with other countries, it must be pointed out that the average Canadian as a provider of employment for British people is worth more than ten Americans.”
