AFTER THE GALE

ARRIVAL OF THREE LINERS AT SYDNEY. AWATEA WINS RACE TO ENTER FIRST. (Recd This Day, 11.10 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The three liners, Awatea, Wanganella, and Mariposa approaching the Heads almost in line made an impressive sight yesterday afternoon. The Awatea arrived at 5.5 p.m. from Auckland, the Wanganella at 5.11 from Wellington and the Mariposa at 5.15 from Auckland.

The ships, when sighted through the haze, were almost in line, but the Awatea drew ahead and won an exciting race to be the first to enter the harbour. The Wanganella was second, but the Mariposa was gaining on her fast at the “finish.”

Captain Davey said the Awatea encountered a “whole gale” on Saturday and Sunday. The vessel was unable to make more than nine knots at one period.
