THE SOVIET PURGE
ARMY SHORT OF OFFICERS. ENROLMENT OF LADS PARTLY TRAINED. LONDON. June 12. The Riga correspondent of the ‘‘Times” says M. Voroshiloff has ordered the enrolment of 10,000 cadets as lieutenants in the Red Army, without waiting for the completion of their course at Army schools. The official reason given is to enable cadets to gain experience in the autumn manoeuvres, but the real explanation is that the Red Army lacks officers, chiefly owing to the long-drawn-out and drastic purge, which deprived the army of between onethird to one-half of its officers above the rank of lieutenant. Thousands have disappeared for reasons which have not been stated. Great numbers, described as traitors, were shot. Unrest also is reported in Soviet industry, where irregular supplies prevent directors and engineers from fulfilling their plans; consequently they are liable to prosecution for sabotage.
