ATTEMPT ON EVEREST
EXPEDITION REPORTED TO BE RETURNING AN ABNORMAL RAINFALL LONDON, June 11. A message just received from Reuter’s correspondent at Darjeerling quotes statements by coolies in the village of Gantok that the Mount Everest expedition led by Mr H. Tilman is returning. The Australian Associated Press understands that the expedition’s timetable is at present not seriously exceeded. Darjeerling advises that the seasonal rainfall at Kalimpong is 15 inches above normal.
A message published on June 6 stated that the expedition had retired to the Kharta Valley and was recuperating there. The party did not ascend far beyond the North Col of Mount Everest owing to the early arrival of the monsoon. It was reported that two of the party might remain in Tibet until the monsoon ended.
