LABOUR PARTY SOCIAL An enjoyable time was spent on Saturday night, when the Labour Party Social Club held its weekly euchre tournament and dance. There was a good attendance. The winners in the euchre were Mrs Meyrick (first), and Mrs Wright (second). The men’s prize was won by Mr Burney with Mr Sexton second. The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr and Mrs Holland. Supper was provided. ENJOYABLE FARMERS’ BALL. In spite of the heavy rain and bitter cold the annual ball of the Carterton branch of the Farmers’ Union, held last night, was well attended and proved most successful and enjoyable. Complete arrangements were made to ensure the success of the ball by efficient committees, the ladies in particular doing splendid work. Excellent music was supplied by Udy’s orchestra and the supper arrangements left little to be desired. The ball is one of the most popular events in the South Wairarapa and it was unfortunate that the weather should have been so unfavourable this year. Extras were played by Mrs V. J. Ashton, Miss M. Herrick (Kokotau) and Mr T. Udy. The M’s.C. were Messrs V. J. Ashton and C. W. Jensen Junr. (Waihakeke).
Mr Hugh Morrison, of Awatoitoi, Provincial President of the Farmers’ Union, was among the guests present. At an interval in the proceedings he expressed his pleasure at being present and congratulated the Carterton branch on the success of the function. Mr Morrison said that he had recently returned from a world tour, and had formed the opinion that New Zealanders, as a people, stood second to none in the world —in fact he ranked them foremost of all. Those present that evening were typical specimens of the high standard of the average New Zealander.
Mr and Mrs Percy Welch, Upper Plain, Mr T. R. Barrer, Miss Barrer and Mr James Watson, Provincial Secretary, were present at the ball.
