SHOCKS IN EUROPE
WIDESPREAD EARTHQUAKE TWO DEATHS AND HUNDREDS ■INJURED TALL BUILDINGS IN LONDON SWAYED By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. LONDON, June 11. Thousands of people were alarmed by earth tremors which occurred at midday today .The shock was felt in several parts of Northern Europe,- including London, Paris and Brussels. It lasted 30 seconds to six minutes. The shock was most severe in the region near Ghent (Belgium), where falling chimneys and bricks injured hundreds and killed one man. Another victim was fatally injured when thrown under a motor-car. Twenty were injured by falling walls at Roubaix, where a wedding party fled from the church. In a number of places telephone communications were disrupted. The tremor in Britain was most acute at Woolwich, where cars which were parked in the arsenal were actually seen to move. Observers also declare that the Great Fire Monument in London, and the television tower at Alexandra Palace swayed and many street clocks stopped. A second shock was felt in Paris this afternoon. ANOTHER TREMOR. FELT IN PARTS OF FRANCE & BELGIUM. (Recd This Day, 9.10 a.m.) LONDON, June 12. Another earthquake shock was felt in parts of France and Belgium, at about 2.30 p.m. today. It lasted for six seconds in Brussels. The tremors on Saturday were severely felt in Amiens and shook the Australian War Memorial at Villers, Bretonneux, but there is no apparent damage.
The authorities will examine St. Paul’s Cathedral tomorrow to .ascertain if the earthquake affected the dome.
Today’s tremors on the Continent were not noticed here.
