FEATHERSTON
LITERARY INSTITUTE. ("Times-Age” Special.) At the annual meeting of the Literary Institute, Mr R. W. Matthews (chairman) presided over a fair attendance of subscribers. The report showed that 97 books had been added to the library during the year. Other books and periodicals had been donated by Mrs R. W. Matthews, Miss E. Viles and Mr and Mrs M. B. Tait. There were 75 subscribers. The building had been painted and necessary interior repairs carried out. The native trees planted last year were doing well. The chairman thanked the committee for their co-operation during the year. He was disappointed that the number of subscribers did not show an increase.
Mr C. C. Kenward waited on the committee on behalf of the Borough Council, to place the Council’s view of the proposed ladies’ rest room before the committee. The Council was in sympathy with the idea, but could not assist financially out of the rates. It was thought that part of the W. E. Bidwill bequest of £5OO could be utilised for this purpose when the money came to hand. The Council wished the committee to go into the matter and submit a scheme. It was decided that Messrs Arch. Clark and N. C. C. Shepherd meet the works committee of the Borough Council and go into the matter. The following were nominated as a committee for the ensuing year: —Miss H. Card, Mesdames N. C. C. Shepherd, A. Clark, R. A. Donald, H. Cundy, J. G. McKenzie, Miss Jean Donald, Misses R. W. Matthews, M. B. Tait, N. C. C. Shepherd, Arch. Clark, C. C. Kenward, the Rev T. Holland and R. S. Keenan. Mr R. W. Matthews was re-elected chairman. A vote of thanks was accorded to Mr H. E. Pendergrast for his services on the committee. Mr Pendergrast did not seek re-election, as he would be Leaving the district. WOLF CUB PACK. The following is the quarterly report of the Featherston Wolf Cub Pack: —At present we have 15 boys in the pack which consists of 3 “Sixers.” During the term 2 Cubs have gone up to the Scout Troop. Three boys have left the pack, one of them having left the district. Attendance at the parades has been good. We have had several committee members present at our weekly meetings. Their lectures proved interesting to the boys. However, from now on we propose. to introduce more of the actual jungle cubbing into the parades. Outdoor activities have been limited but on the King's Birthday we joined the Scouts in a “mystery hike.” Miss Oates, who was assisting with the Pack at the beginning of the year, has resigned, and her position has been filled by Miss Annie Fellingham. We wish to thank Mrs C. Rea for making the wreath which the boys placed on the Cenotaph on Anzac Day. In conclusion I should like to make an appeal for used books suitable for the Cub library.—Gwenda Wenden, Acting C.M.
