CARTERTON

FLOOD LIGHTING CEREMONY, (“Times-Age” Special.) The official opening of the floodlighting of the Memorial Square, Carterton, took place on Friday evening in the presence of a large attendance of town and country people. The Mayor (Mr D. L. Taverner), in a_brief address, stated that the jubilee proceedings had been so successful in Carterton last year that surplus funds were available. It had, therefore, been decided to flood-light the Soldiers’ Memorial erected in the square, and this decision had given universal satisfaction. A tablet in granite, recording the jubilee held last year, had been placed in the square, and this was draped with the Union Jack. Mr Taverner then called on the ' Mayoress (Mrs Taverner) to press the button and instantly the square was brilliantly illuminated. Mrs Taverner then unveiled the ’ tablet, amid applause, upon which was inscribed the date of \the unveiling, and the fact that the ceremony was performed by Mrs D. L. Taverner, Mayoress. Cheers were called for Mrs Taverner and heartily given. The Wairarapa Scottish Pipe Band was in attendance and played several selections. FARMERS’ UNION BALL. The annual ball of the Carterton Farmers’ Union, to be held tonight, is arousing keen k interest throughout the district.
