DRUNKEN DRIVER
SENTENCE OF IMPRISONMENT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, June 10. “I cannot display any leniency, and this and other courts will not tolerate any leniency, where drunken people are in charge of such dangerous machines as cars. Accused was in court in 1934 for intoxication in charge of a car and again in 1936 for a similar offence. On the last occasion he was sentenced to imprisonment. On this occasion he will be sent to jail for three months’ hard labour and his licence will be cancelled for five years.” The above judgment was delivered by Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M., today when Robert Franklin Dobson, aged 25, appeared for sentence for having been intoxicated in charge of a car. Two of Dobson’s companions, Rex Zavcri Beri, aged 19, and James Laurence Finnerty, aged 20, appeared for sentence for unlawfully converting a car. Each was fined £lO, in default 30 days’ imprisonment. Earlier in the day all three appeared in the Supreme Court and were admitted by his Honour Mr Justice Northcroft to three years’ probation for breaking and entering.
