TUNNEL DEVIATION APPROVED BY CABINET Work to be Started Immediately ANNOUNCEMENT BY PRIME MINISTER (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Cabinet has approved of the construction of a railway tunnel through the Rimutakas, five and a quarter miles long, from Mangaroa to Cross Creek, at an estimated cost of £1,000,000. An announcement to this effect was made today by the Prime Minister (the Rt Hon M. J. Savage). The Prime Minister stated that the Minister of Public Works (the Hon R. Semple) was ready to start work on the approaches to the tunnel almost The tunnel will shorten the railway route between Wellington and the Wairarapa by eight miles and will' eliminate Sharp curves as well as the steep gradients of the present mountain railway. The average gradient in the tunnel will be one in sixty.
Working camps are to be established forthwith in the vicinity of Mangaroa and of Cross Creek.
