WAGES TAX
GOVERNMENT AVOIDING “ELECTION STUNT.”
MR ARMSTRONG’S EXPLANATION. TE AROHA, This Day. The Minister of Labour (the Hon H. T. Armstrong) addressed a largely attended meeting in the Majestic Theatre. He said the latest figures showed that 89,000 more people were now in full work than when the Government took office. They had been asked why the Employment Promotion tax of eightpence had not been taken off. That, he said, would be deemed an election stunt, which they would not make. He claimed that the guaranteed price had increased dairy farmers’ incomes from £2 5s a week in 1935 to £5 15s in 1937, while this year it would be further increased.
A vote of confidence and appreciation of the Government’s humanitarian legislation was passed unanimously and musical honours were accorded the speaker.
