MARATHON GOLF

SYDNEY TO MELBOURNE.

CHALLENGE CONTEST FOR £2O. Marathon golf is being provided by two Sydney men who are staging a contest over the world's longest “course”—from Sydney to Melbourne. It is a challenge contest for £2O be-, tween Messrs Herbert Boulter and Richard George. The men have known each other for 10 years, and the challenge arose during a discussion on the difficulties which beset Alfred Williamson on his recent tricycle ride from Melbourne to Sydney. Both men are anxious to have a referee with them to ensure that the rules of golf are observed.

The plan is to set off from Sydney General Post Office about 5 o’clock one morning before the busy trafficsets in, and to continue along the main road to Melbourne. The men expect to travel about 15 miles a day, reach-» ing Melbourne, 565 miles away, within six weeks. They will take 12 golf balls each and replenish where necessary. They realise that many balls will be lost in the bush.

As long as a ball remains on the road —even if it is in a pot-hole—it must be hit out, and the number of strokes duly recorded. Wet or fine, play must proceed until the daily 15 miles have been covered. The type of clubs to be used has not yet been decided.
