NEW ZEALAND EXPORTS

OUTSTANDING FEATURES A SHARP CONTRACTION (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The outstanding feature of the overseas trade returns for April is a sharp contraction in export values, an expansion in imports, and a reduction in the visible favourable balance of exports. Thus, for April, exports are valued at £4,547,000 compared with £8,402,000 for the corresponding month of last year, a decrease of £3,855,000. The latest figure is £1,590,000 below that for April, 1936.

Imports during April were valued at £4,455,000, compared with £4,342,000 for April, 1937, an increase of £113,000 and £896,000 in excess of the £3,559,000 shown for April, 1936. The surplus of exports over imports for April is only £92,000, as compared with £4,060,000 for April, 1937, and £2,-578,000 for April, 1936.
