“ABSOLUTE DISGRACE”
MASTERTON STATION CRANE OPINIONS OF CARRIER In the opinion of Mr L. Pearson, a well-known carrier the crane at present in use at the Masterton Railway Station is an absolute disgrace for the size of the town it serves. If a three or four ton tractor came by rail in a case, said Mr Pearson, it had to be handled, by men, and this took from 11 hours to 2 hours; with a suitable crane the work would occupy about ten minutes. Sometimes a full truck of reinforcing or other iron, in bundles of five, six and up to ten cwt had to be handled, and it took about three men to pull the present crane round. Therefore half a day was spent in unloading a truck, besides the extra cost in employing men for a much longer period then would be the case if a suitable crane were available.
“As we expect the railways to be handling far more goods in the future than is the case at present, a new crane would result in an all-round saving in costs and provide a much-desired convenience,” said Mr Pearson in conclusion.
