STOCK DISEASES
RESEARCH IN NEW ZEALAND MINISTER ON RECENT CRITICISM (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, June 6. Recent allegations that agricultural research, particularly in relation to stock diseases, was haphazard in New Zealand were answered by the Minister of Agriculture, the Hon W. Lee Martin, when he returned by the Awatea after attending a. meeting of the Australian Agricultural Council at Canberra. He said research stations in the Dominion, generally speaking, were not so large as those in Australia, but the work that was being done compared favourably with investigations in the Commonwealth. Mr Lee Martin recalled that prior to his departure for Australia he had told a gathering of farmers at Morrinsville that it was intended to intensify the branch of research which dealt with farm animals. The difficulty was in securing men to undertake the work, and he considered that, in view of its limited means, the department had performed good work. It was mentioned by the Minister that the Glenfield research station in Australia, a special study was being made of mastitis. The problem was being tackled from a different angle from that which New Zealand scientists were exploring, but there was a close connection between the two sets of experiments and, taking them together, it was possible that good results would accrue.
