Turkish is now dominant in Alexandretta, says the Antioch correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph.” All Christian-owned shops are closed and the situation is tense, although the provisional Turkish administrator, Dr Melek, is preserving order. Meanwhile the League . Commission is resuming registration for the election to be held on June 15. It is, however, disclosed that France guaranteed Turkey a majority over the Syrian Nationalist Party before the commission. left Europe. It was reported yesterday that 20,000 French, troops ;and Moroccan levies were- patrolling the main centres of Alexandretta. Martial law has been proclaimed in the Sanjak and thousands of Armenians are reported to be fleeing the territory in the fear of a general massacre if the Turks gain control.
