NATIONAL WELFARE
MEETING OF MASTERTON LEAGUE. HOME SERVICE ASSOCIATION. The monthly meeting of the Women’s National Welfare League was held yesterday at the Midland Hotel. Those present were: Miss Kummer (in the chair), Mesdames H. E. Either, G. G. Tolhurst, R. C. Drummond, A. W. McKenzie, S. J. Munn, T. F. Watson, L. Hunter, Latimer, E. J. Coleman, H. P. Glen, H. P. Harrison, F. Daniell, G. H. Collie, Carruthers, and A. E. Kilgour, I and Miss M. Boddington. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames T. Jordan, F. Garland, A. Corskie, S. Fletcher, W. McKenzie, A. McCracken and McConnell and Misses Cameron and Reynolds. A vote of condolence was passed with Mr T. Jordan in his recent bereavement. Mrs S. Fletcher, first president of the league was elected a life member in appreciation of her good work for the league. Letters and a telegram from the Home Service Association, Auckland, were read and it was proposed that the secretary write and ask two delegates from all women’s organisations to attend next month’s meeting to discuss a home service association for Masterton. Mrs Tolhurst reported on two visits paid to the Masterton Hospital during May. Flowers, biscuits and the usual tea were distributed to T.B. patients. The visitors for June are Mrs G. H. Collie and Miss Kenner, June 14 and 28. Mrs A. W. McKenzie reported six cases visited in social welfare work, groceries, bedding, and bread being distributed. The Two Garment room was given a good spring clean. Clothing is needed, especially children’s warm clothing and all sympathisers are asked to send what they can to the Two Garment Room, c/o the Town Clerk’s Office. It was decided to visit the Buchanan Home about July. Mrs Pither reported on the work for the blind. The response to the collectors -at the film shown by the Cosy and Regent. Theatre last Monday and Saturday realised £l2 17s, and the •league thanked all who donated and to the ladies’ appeal. The collectors were Mesdames Pither, Carruthers, A. W. McKenzie, Glen,, Drummond and Corskie and Miss Betty Coleman. Mrs McConnell (nee Miss Coyla McCracken) resigned from the league as she will be residing in Wellington. A letter of appreciation of her work amongst the crippled children in the hospital is to be forwarded to her. The following donors were thanked: Mesdames Weller and Sharnweber and Mr Smith.
